Looks like the whole team for the Southern Songster book are present on this thread! Not a bad thing at all. I took my opinion on the Clements recording from Roy Palmer Bushes and Briars page 51, it doesn't mean Roy was correct of course. My immediate reaction is where are other recordings from Gardiner? It's just a balance of probabilities I suppose, because you could say the same about Sharp, to a lesser degree. It could be Gardiner felt, like Sharp that the phonograph 'hindered' the singers performance. I've collected songs with a pad and a biro from singers who refused to have anything to do with recording devices.
