I know it's a bit late for the OP's research and not quite Hull (though sometimes in the same local authority), but my husband was from Beverley. He said that in the 40s when he was in Primary school if you ate an apple in the playground some 'ignorant boys' would ask you to give them the 'cork'. There never was a core when he ate an apple though.
