Not so, Nigel. When you say "jobs for those who can work" you are not simply assigning the right to a job. You're assigning responsibilities to those in power to strive to provide those jobs. Once the person is in work, he or she then has to assume the responsibility to do the job to the best of their ability. Likewise, my view is that we should have the right to equality of opportunity, and that those who are in a position to advance us toward that goal have the responsibility to work for it as hard as possible. In every facet of Donuel's long list, this is the principle you should try to apply. Also, I'm not especially keen on the unqualified sentiment of your last line. I had to give up classroom teaching because of arthritis in my legs and severe back trouble. The local authority who employed me tried to assign me instead to a desk job involving the use of IT, in which at the time I had absolutely no skills, in an office in a town that would have involved two hours' driving on narrow country lanes every day, much of it in the dark... Well?

I dislike the concept of anyone unemployed being obliged to do absolutely any job thrown at them, especially in these days of emasculated unions and "the flexible jobs market" which has the main aim of shamelessly exploiting people...
