A Scottish Gaelic translation of the Hymn of St Francis of Assisi,
made at the request of Fr Colin MacInnes, the parish priest in Northbay, Barra, at the time.



A Thighearna, dèan mise nam theachdaire sìth;
Fuath biodh as m' aonais, biodh gaol na mo chridh';
Far an tachair an ciùrradh, biodh mathanas saor;
Is far am bi teagamh, biodh creideamh is gaol;
Far faighear eu-dòchas, biodh dòchas nas fheàrr;
Far faighear an duibhre, biodh soillse nan gràs;
An àite bhi brònach, biodh sòlas is àgh;
'S biodh Tighearna na glòrach an còmhnaidh nar pàirt.

A Mhaighstir Dhiadhaidh, O deònaich nad ghràdh
Nach iarr mi bhith socrach 's an-shocair aig càch;
Nach seall mi mo thuigs' ach bhith tuigseach mi fhìn
Nach iarr mi gaol chàich ach gun gràdhaich mi Sibh;
Oir 's ann ann an tabhartas gheibh sinn gun dìth,
'S mu thairgeas sinn mathanas, mathar dhuinn fhìn,
'S cha bhàs dhuinn a th' ann ged a stampar an ùir
Ach aiseirigh ghlòrmhor gu beò-bhith as ùr.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me bring your love;
Where there is injury, pardon and be free;
Where there is doubt, there is faith and love;
Where there is despair, there is better hope;
Where there is darkness, be the light of grace;
Instead of being sad, be joyous and happy;
And may the glory of the Lord always be with us.

Divine Master, O grant in thy love
That I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To not seek to be understood but be understanding myself;
To not seek the love of others but to love You;
For it is in giving that we receive without wanting,
And if we offer pardoning, pardoned are ourselves,
And it will not die for us even if the earth is trampled
But a glorious resurrection to new life.
