Suppose for a moment that we don’t give a rat’s ass(hole) about the lexical definitions. Suppose… for a moment that you would only want to hear my analysis of these two words.
A ‘dick’ is predominantly used to describe someone who’s actively irritating others with various malicious acts. An ‘asshole’, on the other hand, is passive. Let me elaborate.
For example, you’re shopping for groceries at the supermarket. A ‘dick’ would push his cart into your butt, say sorry, laugh about it, and then cut in line. Hell, he would steal the items from your cart and throw in items that are embarrassing or super expensive.
An asshole, however, would just stand in your way. When asked to move, he would stare at you incessantly, as if he was the owner of the space, and frown.
Thus, being called an ‘asshole’ is still better than being referred to as ‘dick’.

The Dick pawns were small. The Dick rooks were large, the Bishops looked pretty normal but were dicks. The knights wore condoms. The Dick king or queen came in only one version. Rich Dicks and Bitch Dicks.
