I heard the same story told by a tourist guide in Cornwall in 2016 and also found it printed in the little book of Cornish folk taleswe brought home. It was said to have happened somewhere in Cornwall, of course. I love songs about people dying gruesome, melodramatic deaths, so having this story in song form is a real delight!
