I did consider that there might be an objection to saying 'my wife' on the ground that it signified possession, but then you might feel you couldn't say 'my aunt', 'my cousin', 'my friend', 'my neighbour', 'my doctor', 'my local shop' - any number of people and things that could be thought of as close to you because of their relationship or locality.
