I suspect that the poetry readers in question believe that they are making their poems sound deep and meaningful.

I have even heard someone on the radio, when asked to read his poem, say:
"I'm sorry, I can't do the poetry voice" as if he thought reading poetry in a normal voice wasn't good enough.
