The Met Office (UK) is saying that we could be due for a re-run of 2018's "Beast from the East" in the next couple of weeks, with temperatures dropping to -10c. While that may not seem much in Northern US terms it is not common in UK.
Also recent 'gritting' of UK roads has not been as effective as previously. The system used here relies on the vehicles using the roads to spread the grit and force it down into the snow and ice. Much lower traffic levels due to Covid/lockdowns means the gritting loses its efficacy.
