I also had the Childrens Newspaper, my parents thought it more educational than comics.I didn't read much of the news, there a jokes or puzzles page - that was more my line. I sent for the stamps approvals because they came with packets of free stamps. No need to buy anything you didn't want, but I usually did. My father got fed up with firms that kept sending approvals that we hadn't sent for. On one occasion he wrote back to them saying unless they collected them or sent postage within a certain time, we would keep them. So months later I was allowed to stick them in my album.
