Thread Name: Origins: The Holly and the Ivy
Subject: RE: Origins: The Holly and the Ivy
Everything else holly and ivy here so you might as well include a version of the Sains Day Carol which I think was translated from the French some time in the dim and distant past.

Oh the holly she bears a prickle as sharp as the thorn
And Mary she bore Jesus on a midwinter's morn
And Mary she bore Jesus our saviour for to be
And the first tree that's in the greenwood it is the holly,
Holly----holly
And the first tree that's in the greenwood it is the holly.

Now the holly she bears a blossom as white as the milk,
And we trust in our saviour all wrapped up in silk,
And we trust in our saviour, our saviour for to be,
And the etc.

Now the holly she bears a berry as green as the grass
And we trust in our saviour who died on the cross,
And we trust in our saviour etc.

Now the holly she bears a berry as red as the blood,
And Mary she bore Jesus to do sinners good,
And Mary she bore Jesus our saviour etc.,

Now the holly she bears a berry as black as the coal,
And Mary she bore Jesus who died for us all,
And Mary etc.,

This from my own singing not from old tradition, based loosely on the version recorded by The Watersons on Frost and Fire.
