I think the words used in Outlander theme are ones composed to the tune of the original song by Robert Louis Stevenson? Read that somewhere recently (not in Outlander context!) - best double check tho?
As well as composing words (usually setting then to existing fiddle tunes) Burns also collected folksongs and fragments which he repaired. He was concerned that the songs would be lost, felt it important that people sang them!
