The older tune is not one Burns wanted to be associated with - he described it as mediocre in a letter to Thomson, which must have been a strong hint for him to find something better. The new tune was a flash of inspiration - Burns was right.

The old tune was used for other sets of words. Again Burns got it right and selected the only text that was any good.
