I have learnt since I posted here that it was written by Bob Davenport himself - don't know exactly when. He did write a sequel song later that is on his CD - The Common Stone - (Topic Records – TSCD552) that is called - You Came Back Down The Long Road - and is sung by Linda Thompson.
I might have the words to that somewhere...I will look.
