There are enough pre-O'Riada iconiography of the drum to contradict that. O'Riada may have brought it into the musical mainstream though. And yes, pre-O'Riada they often had bells and people acrtually called them tambourine. Fintan Vallely had some insights and sources for the name, if I recall correctly.
