I agree that "haunt" is probably correct; I don't think notch was used in that sense back then.

I have a second correction to Richie and Stewie's transcriptions:

Last time a saw little Maggie
She was sittin' on the banks of the sea
With a forty-four, a rounder,
And a banjo on her knee

To me that makes much more sense than a 44 "around her" -- what would that mean? On the other hand, having a rounder (ie, a vagrant/drunk) would make much more sense in that context.
