Thread Name: Give us a song there will ya
Subject: RE: Give us a song there will ya
I have a knowledge (not a memory) of Dad & Mrs Williams singing 2 songs 'Tangerine' & 'Old Black Billy', presumably at a party/get together. One neighbour had a TV & I vaguely remember watching it.

We lived in the same street as the Williams family from when I was 7 (1959-66) but only moved about a mile away so would have still spent time with the people in our old street when Dad wasn't working as he worked 7 days in his new business for the first 2 years. I have no idea how long the singalongs continued - then in 1995 I went to a folk club & found them again!!

lyrics search says Frank Sinatra sang 'Tangerine', & 'Old Black Billy' was one of the traditional songs discovered in the post WW2 search for these songs & tunes to conteract the increasing Americanisation of our culture. It was one of the hits of Reedy River where a group of the rediscovered songs returned to public fame & notice. This was the start of the Australian folk revival.

Unfortunately it turned out Old Black Billy was written in 1938 but it stayed in the folk tradition as it's a great song & was written in the tradition.
