Malcolm, a logon password is a good idea. Microsoft will try to make you logon with an email and account through them when you first set up the computer, but you can bypass that (and should bypass that) and keep your logon local. A password helps protect the contents a little bit if your device is ever stolen. Having had that happen once (2005 was a very bad year), I would never set it up without a logon password.
