Don't clean a wound with surgical spirit; you do more harm than good. Likewise stay away from iodine. Steve is right; soap and water is best and safest. If you like, soak the wound in a basin of warm saline, or apply hot compresses made with normal saline.

Then put a dab of antibiotic ointment on a sterile bandage, and apply the bandage to the wound.
