Hello!

I once read about a sailor’s lodging-house based in Chicago, I believe from the mid-late 1800s/early 1900s, that was known for training barely-able sailors. I seem to remember an anecdote about how new sailors who came from this place knew to say they’ve “crossed the line”. Am I making this up or was there a real named place with this reputation?
