Thanks Ed. I'll try it again.

When I found (or thought) that Win 7 backup would no longer work I selected 'Aomei backup' (free) to do a full system backup. I backup to the bare drive I replaced with an SSD (hence the Win 10 reinstall) connected with a SATA-USB cable. The backup seems to work OK, but I've not tried a restore. I've never restored a full File History backup either, though my wife has often retrieved old versions of files using it.

She runs a File History backup to a 'Passport' drive when she's done some work. She starts it manually after plugging in the drive, after which she removes it - to minimise the risk of ransomeware encrypting it.

I do another File History backup to an NFS network drive monthly. (I think Win 10 Home doesn't support NFS - not sure.)That machine is only powered up for backups. So there are 3 backups that could be restored.

I've no experience of Paragon, and I can't remember if I considered it when choosing Aomei.

Freefilesync seems to work like rsync, which I use to backup all my my Linux machines. If rsync were available on Windows I'd use that!
