About five years ago I was in a Russian singing group and this was one of the songs I learned. It was as wonderful to sing as it is to hear. Another one was Eh Dorogi (Oh, The Roads). The songs are expressions of the memories that leave indelible impressions in the memories of every common soldier and his or her loved ones and the connection we wish to have with those whom we will never see again.
