Thread Name: ADD: Songs of Mordecai Gebirtig (1877-1942)
Subject: ADD: Yankele
from Elizabeth:
YANKELE (by Mordecai Gebirtig, English translation by Elizabeth Block)
Go to sleep, my Yankele, my baby, Hush your crying, close your little eyes. A big boy who has all his teeth already, Should mama need to sing him lullabies?
A big boy who has all his teeth already, Who'll be going off to school by and by, Studying the Torah and Gemarah, When his mama rocks him, should he cry?
A big boy who'll be studying the Torah, An honour student, diligent and bright, Who'll fill his daddy's heart with pride and pleasure, Should he keep his mama up all night?
A big boy who will be an honour student, A scholar and a merchant also, yet, A bridegroom who will make some nice girl happy, Should this boy be lying here all wet?
Go to sleep, my merchant, scholar, bridegroom, The years you'll be a baby are so few. So many mama's tears, such time and trouble 'Twill cost to make a mensch out of you!
