Steve, anyone with even a modest understanding of history knows that Afghanistan was going to do this the moment the US left no matter who was president. Though fool Trump really set up the Afghans to fail because he was negotiating retreat with the Taliban when he was in office - he wasn't including the government in his negotiations so they had all the more reason to buckle. It does seem odd that Biden didn't change the players, he left Trump's plan in place, pushing it back a few months. (He has been busy with other things.) The biggest puzzle is why his people didn't insist on continuing to use Bagram instead of the Kabul airport (and why they didn't plan way ahead to get the Afghan families who aided the US out?) These issues would face anyone trying to wrap this up: there have been four presidents with this on their dance cards and it would have been best all around if Dubya hadn't been trying to one-up his father and started this whole Afghan and then Iraq period of aggression to begin with. As it happened, when Bin Laden was killed on Obama's watch, it was in Pakistan. Go figure.
