Portuguese custard tarts are notoriously difficult to make apparently. We discovered them in Madeira (which is part of Portugal) a few years ago and we had one every afternoon in our favourite coffee bar (just down from Cristiano Ronaldo's sculpture in Funchal). In the UK I've found them in Nando's ( they were rancid), in Tesco (very average), in Marks and Spencer (very nice but a bit sweet) and in a local Bude bakery (superb but at eye-wateringly ripoff prices). By far the best were at Lutzy's coffee shop at Exeter Quay in Devon. Lutzy, a lovely Portuguese lady, only makes them on Saturdays, so when we go we buy a sackful and gorge for a day or two. Give her a call and she'll have them ready for you. Great coffee too, in a wonderful spot on a sunny day. They need eating fairly pronto to be at their best. I mean, what's life all about?
