Susannah Rose sang English lyrics to this melody at the Getaway, so I begged her for the lyrics. This is what she sent. Thanks, Susannah.

LIFE LET US CHERISH
Life let us cherish while yet the taper glows,
And the fresh flow'ret pluck ere it close
Why are we fond to toil and care?

Why choose the rankling thorn to wear,
And heedless by the lily stray
Which blossoms in the way?
When clouds obscure the atmosphere,
And forked lightnings rend the air,

The sun resumes his silver crest,
And smiles adorn the West.
The genial seasons soon are o'er,
Then let us ere we quit this shore
ontentment seek, it is life's zest,

The sunshine of the breast.
Away with every toil and care,
And cease the rankling thorn to wear;
With valiant* hearts life's conflict meet

Till death sounds the retreat.
The original word is “manful.”

Life Let Us Cherish” was originally a song entitled “Freut Euch des Lebens,” written in 1796 by Swiss poet Johann Martin Usteri and composer Hans Georg Nageli. It became immensely popular in America as “Life Let Us Cherish.” It was published in the very popular Victorian collection, Heart Songs.
