Well when it comes to carbon dioxide emissions, Australia and the US should be good friends. The Oz prime minister stated last week that he wouldn't threaten "the Australian way of life" by cutting coal production and exports. I don't think he's noticed his heatwaves, droughts and wildfires. And here's something else: steelmaking is one of the biggest carbon emitters, around 8% of all greenhouse gases. China is by far the world's biggest steel producer, producing eight times more steel that the next biggest. Guess who gets lots of that Oz coal (which you need to make steel). Every ton of steel made produces 1.8 tons of carbon dioxide. Even more: to make steel you need iron ore. Sixty percent of the ore that China uses comes from, guess where...Australia.
