Thread Name: BS: Trump Actions & Effects (NO new Trmp threads!)
Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects
Whilst I don't want to divert the thread away from Trump's misdeeds (though I shudder to think about the way we'd be going on climate change had he got a second term), I would like to say that I try to recycle whatever I can (my utility room is cluttered with bags containing separated-out cardboard, paper, bottles, plastic...), I drive a car that routinely does 57 to the gallon, I try to buy organic food and I grow a lot of my own, I have a big garden dedicated to wildlife, etc., etc., I honestly don't know why I'm bothering. China is not going to cut its emissions in any real way anytime soon. India has said cheerfully that it will carry on burning coal for decades to come. Australia won't allow its Australian way of life to be threatened so will continue to supply coal and iron ore to China (Oz is the second-biggest coal exporter in the world). Bolsinaro will continue to allow logging in the Amazon to the extent that the rainforest is now a net carbon emitter rather than a carbon absorber. The US, honestly as seen from this end, doesn't seem to be much interested in the climate crisis (I don't exonerate my own country, by the way). My word, any US politician who, for example, suggested that the price of petrol (gas, yeah?) should go up to even half of what we are paying in the UK would be out on his ear in half an hour...

So there's China, India, Australia, the US... they're not that bothered. So I turn my thermostat down by a degree and shove my plastic milk bottle into the correct slot down the recycling centre. I'll carry on doing it but I'd really like somebody to tell me why I should bother....
