I bought a piano accordion to use as a melody instrument in English music sessions. I really struggled with the bass for years and frequently hit the wrong button and lost the tune completely.

After I moved to New Zealand I pretty much stopped playing for a couple of years. Then I started playing again with the same old problems.

Then I saw a local lass playing an accordion which was not even fitted with any bass notes and had a moment of revelation. Why do I need to play the bass when I want to play the tunes?

I gave up playing the bass side and my tune playing has improved no end. Far fewer mistakes and no angst about hitting the wrong bass buttons.

If you don't need to play bass you don't have to bother playing bass. If you do want to play good bass, go take a few lessons.
