Isn't folk music simply about people and people's lives? Whaling was a reality for a long time, a brutal and cruel reality. Nic Jones sings about it from a whalers' point of view, not from the whale's. Should we condemn songs like "Hunting for Humpback Whale",or "Soon will the Wellerman come", descriptive as they are,for not containing the criticism of the activity that was normal to the times? That stops short of "Political Correctness for Folk Musicians 101". Environmentally involved as I am, I love those songs! They are a part of history.
