Thread Name: Origins: The two Kemp's Jigs
Subject: RE: Origins: The two Kemp's Jigs
Thanks, Helen.

this site:   abcnotation.com
is an excellent site to know. Search for tune by name, then click on the button that says "tune", and you will get to a variety of formats.
The abc versions often give origins.

Searching for Kemp's Jig brings up two pages of tunes, many of which are identical or almost so. Read the titles, as there is one that doesn't belong. (Kempstead Something)

At first I thought there were 3 Kemp's Jigs, but there are two. One is in 4/4 time and the other is 6/8. They are entirely different pieces of music. In addition, there is a piece in 6/4, but that is simply the 6/8 tune slowed down and made to sound richer with half-steps.

In addition there is a version labelled "Augmented" which has a new section and a D# in it, but I'm not interested in that version.

Upthread somebody linked to Tunearch. Clicking that leads to a VERY LOUD playing of the 4/4 version. It sounds good, but is noticeably slower than the Gryphon recording also linked above. See? I'm not the only one who slows down.

Funny thing, but the Tunearch site also has sheet music, but it's sheet music for the 6/8 tune. Pity the poor beginner who listens to the 4/4 recording and then tries to use the 6/8 sheet music.
