Dost ask me, why I send thee here
This firstling of the infant year?
Dost ask me, what this primrose shews,
Bepearled thus with morning dews?—

The primrose is one of the first flowers to bloom in Scotland, in March. With "the infant year" Burns is probably alluding to the ancient Roman year having begun in March.
