The death has occurred of renowned Donegal fiddler Jimmy Campbell at the age of 84.

He was regarded as one of the Donegal's most influential traditional musicians.

From an Gleann Beag outside Glenties, Mr Campbell spent three decades working and living in the UK before returning to his native townland An Teanga Mheáin.

He played regularly at his local pub The Glen Tavern with his brother, the late Vincent Campbell, and his son Peter.

There have been some beautiful comments on the Cairdeas na bhFidléirí and Fiddle Music of Donegal facebook pages re Jimmy from other fiddle players

RIP Jimmy. I remember Jimmy's interest in a reel that I played and his kind compliments that I felt were totally unearned or merited. He was a soft, kind, generous spirited man and his music was straight and truthful, full of happiness fun and joy. May he rest peacefully. My condolences to Peter and to all of Jimmy's family and friends. Ní bheidh a leithid ann arís*." [*there will never be the likes of him again]

A hero to us fiddle players. He influenced us in so many ways. He was like the pied piper and he raised our spirits whenever he walked into a room. Suaimhneas síoraí leis. [eternal rest]

Hard to take in. An irreplaceable figure in Donegal fiddling. Great company, steeped in the tradition, a wonderful player, so encouraging, and as solid as Donegal granite. And a singer to cap it all. It's a sad day. Still, he put it up to us all to the very end. His contribution and the memories will live on. Condolences to his comrade in arms Peter and all the family, to the wider Campbell connection and to the many friends Jimmy made in a long and storied life here and over the water. Listening to himself, Vincent and Peter now in a late night session in Ardara in 2013.

Jimmy's brother Vincent Campbell died in 2018. https://www.irishnews.com/news/northernirelandnews/2018/12/04/news/tributes-paid-following-death-of-donegal-fiddle-player-1499836/
