Just picking up on a thought by Frank Staplin back in 2010 that the "wide Missouri most likely refers to Missouri territory, not the river."

This is not likely at all, since the Missouri Territory existed for only nine years, from 1812 to 1821, decades before the appearance of the song.

The much smaller State of Missouri was admitted to the Union in 1821.
