a naval song of the American Civil War
THE CUMBERLAND CREW

For the eighth day of March told a terrible story:
The most of our seamen to the swells made acclaim;
Our flag it was wrapt in a mantle of glory
By the heroic deeds of the Cumberland crew.

On the eighth day of March, about ten in the morning,
The sky it was cloudless and bright shone the sun,
When the drum on the Cumberland sounded the warning
Which told every seaman to stand by his gun;

several videos on youtube, including
The 97th Regiment String Band
Although they sing "on that ill-fated day, about 10 in the morning," they do sing the eighth day of March in the previous verse.
