In the N.Y. Herald (Nov. 9, 1884) a NYC “ballad merchant” was quoted as saying “The Union songs which are most in demand are ‘Cumberland’s Crew,’ ‘Tenting on the Old Camp Ground,’ ‘Marching through Georgia,’ and ‘Hail, Columbia!’”
