The earliest dated copy I can find appeared anonymously in the Sunday Dispatch (NYC) (May 17, 1863). It has seven eight-line stanzas.

It's biggest difference is that the date of the sinking is given erroneously as March 9th.

The newspaper believed romantically that the song "was composed by one of the crew of the Cumberland after he swam ashore."
