This brings back an old memory. I have since school days enjoyed crosswords and graduated from fairly simple ones to the Times at the pub with Mike Pittock. During the working day I usually took the Independent, the Mail was a good standard but I would never bring myself to buy it although I would accept the puzzle page from our resident Fascist. One day one of the crew asked me why I did not do the Mirror? I replied that it was not challenging enough. I was then asked to complete the next day's one while the chaps timed me. I raced through it in no time except for one clue which I could not complete although I was sure the rest of the puzzle was correct. The reason why was obvious the next day when it turned out to be a US spelling!!!!! The chaps who had ribbed me the day before were gracious enough to accept that I should be forgiven. They were a great bunch and I thoroughly enjoyed my time working with them - happy days.
