Hi All...seems like a mystery..I have sung the song in the Rees Elliott version for years but I also heard it sung by a man called Allan Cowan who was a concert chairman at South Moor Excelsior Working Man's Club which suggests that the song had a life outside of the folk club movement.Perhaps we'll never know.......
