Charmion, the January 6 committee's equivalent in Canada would be a special committee
of the House of Commons. Judicial enquiries -- "royal commissions" -- are established by the governor in council under the Inquiries Act. A crucial difference in Canada is that one cannot decline to answer a committee's question out of fear of self-incrimination; any incriminating statement, however, cannot be used in court because of parliamentary privilege.
