"The Republic of China, which had overthrown the Qing in 1911, took control of Taiwan on behalf of the Allies of World War II following the surrender of Japan in 1945. The resumption of the Chinese Civil War resulted in the ROC's loss of mainland China to forces of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and consequent retreat to Taiwan in 1949. Its effective jurisdiction has since been limited to Taiwan and smaller islands."

The Republic of China that took control of Taiwan in 1945 only existed from 1912 to 1949 and has not existed since the loss of mainland China to the Chinese Communist Party. The republic of China IS Taiwan and has now, to avoid confusion, begun to put Taiwan as well as ROC since 2005

The entity that is now China, under the rule of the Communist party, has never had control of Taiwan and should never do so.
