That "American song book" is "The Songster's Museum" (Hartford [Conn.]: Henry Benton, 1829).

"The Noble Scuball [sic]" is the very first song, and the text is clearly taken from a British broadside.

The later American versions of the song appear to be entirely recreated from this or a similar source, evidently from memory.
