Some posts way up thread express bewilderment about "With the ring-tail set all avast the mizzen peak" or mondegreens thereof. I don't know about "ring-tail", although the same phrase occurs in at least one other shanty, but surely the phrase after that is "abaft the mizzen peak", where "abaft" is one of the family of mainly nautical words starting a- and means behind.
