I found out somewhere that a ringtail was a triangular fore-and-aft stunsail set on a gaff-rigged mizzen. I suppose that in this case, in a high wind, it is causing the ship to pitch and making the dolphin-striker hit the sea. The drunken captain is more concerned with some uncoiled sheets than with the set of the sails.
