When I was about ten years old, I read a book called 'Mr. Wilmer'. Mr. Wilmer worked in a big office in a book city, and tucked in the edge of the mirror in his apartment was the birthday card he had received from his aunt. Every year he removed the old one and put in the new one, then kept that one for a year.

As a kid, I didn't realize that the author was trying to demonstrate Mr. Wilmer's profound isolation, but still the little story touched me enough that I have remembered it all my life. Your granddad's song about the Christmas card has reminded me again.
