This was one 0f two songs I rememnber Scan Tester of Sussex singing- the other was 'I wish they'd do it now'.

I think he said he got both from Irish singers passing through Sussex, and his version may be the source of any idea that it's of English origin.
    I don't remember what he called it- does it matter?- it's an excellent song & Scan did a great job of it
