I studied Robert Burns poetry at Edinburgh University as a part of the English(!) Literature lectures. He seemed to write in a Lallans dialect with so many apostrophes, trying to reproduce the accent phonetically. Luckily, I've always had an ear for languages, and spoke 'Scots' the whole time I was 'up there' (I taught later in Edinburgh and Glasgow schools).
So many Burns Nights! I absolutely loved 'em. I would end the evening suffering from First Degree Burns!
