Out of interest, 'pled' didn't look right to me but I had deen it before so I looked it up and found the following bit of trivia -

"The formal pleaded is more common in British English while pled is more common in Scottish and American English."

I wonder why it became more common in the US and Scotland? Maybe Trump's Scottish connections? :-D
