Point of order: they're shells tipped with depleted uranium, which is rather heavy and capable of taking a wickedly sharp edge. Good for piercing high-grade armour, and (sadly) for yielding cries of "Argh! Nuclear" from Kremlin spinmeisters.

I can remember when Magnetic Resonance Imaging was called "Nuclear Magnetic Resonance", and myself getting frightened by the N word, despite being in the science trade.
