Well, I do confess to a tendency to romanticize.
I like to think of the earthworms coming out to wriggle on the pavements
as wriggling for joy that it's warm and wet enough to be spring.
Anyway, it's dangerous for them, it turns out,
to be in a spot where the sun can dry them out:
I once read, in my turn, that earthworms have to be good and damp
in order to take in oxygen.
